ATORVASTATIN   ATORVASTATIN

This drug also reduces the concentration of triglycerides in the blood, which may help to prevent coronary artery heart disease.

Atorvastatin is never usually the first choice when treating high levels of cholesterol and triglyceride. Normally these conditions are first treated with weight loss, exercise, and a low cholesterol diet and saturated fats. When these measures fail to yield the desired results then Atorvastatin is added to the regime.

The higher the dosage of atorvastatin prescribed, the higher the reduction of cholesterol. Dosage is adjusted as needed after blood cholesterol determinations are performed.

Atorvastatin is usually prescribed as a once day treatment. Dosages start at around 10-40 mg daily, to be taken any time of day with or without food. It is advised that tablets be stored at or around room temperature.

If you are pregnant, the drugs’ effect on the fetus is unknown, and may be used if guided by your doctor. Nursing mothers must work along with their doctors to help decide if taking the drug is more beneficial than stopping treatment.

Generally minor side effects include fatigue, headache, constipation, gas, heartburn, and diarrhea.
