Side Effects of Daytrana

The most common side effects of Daytrana are: vomiting, nasal congestion, decreased appetite, sleeplessness, sadness/crying, twitching, weight loss, nausea, inflammation of the nasal passages, and irritation (redness, itching) at site of application. Other side effects seen with methylphenidate, the active ingredient of Daytrana, include dizziness, headache, fever, nervousness, allergic reactions, drowsiness, increased blood pressure, and psychosis (abnormal thinking or hallucinations).

Risks of Daytrana:

Like other stimulant medications, Daytrana is normally not to be used in children with structural cardiac abnormalities and it should be used cautiously in children with hypertension. Daytrana should also be given carefully if a patient has a history of alcoholism or drug dependence.

Daytrana Costs

Daytrana comes in 4 dosage strengths, from 10mg to 30mg. It is worn for 9 hours, providing relief from ADHD symptoms for nearly 12 hours. Other factors include: Methylphenidate is the generic name for Ritalin, the active ingredient in many other ADHD medications, including Concerta, Ritalin LA, Metadate, etc., The Daytrana patch is applied to a child's hip 2 hours before you need symptom relief to start.

Although many people will not see the benefit of a patch for their child's ADHD medication, it may be helpful for parents who can't get their kids to swallow pills or even take medication from an opened capsule that they sprinkle on food. Another benefit is that you can take the patch off if you need more flexibility and do not need all day symptom control.

I'm a 50 yr old adult female newly diagnosed with ADD/depression/yrs of constant fatigue. I am a wife, mother, and work part time as a nurse. I started on Emsam 6mg patch(MAOI) 4 mo ago in combo with Vyvanse(stimulant). It took about 3-4 weeks to get over the daily headache/neck/shoulder pain, spacy feeling, and floating away feeling. I almost gave up around week 3, but decided to stick it out. Crying jags stopped about 4 weeks. When the full positive effect finally to took hold at about 6-8 weeks (almost overnight) it was remarkable. I have never been so organized with little to no mental effort. I felt emotionally resiliant and a zest for life that had been missing for a long time. I had the energy to be much more friendly,talkative, and embrace life. My energy level went up although I always have (and still have) an underlying constant fatigue. I found that I have a nack for home decorating which I never did before. Everyone who knew me could not believe how the organization and decorating part of my life had changed for the better. 2 problems developed though. (#1) I could hardly sleep. Being exhausted while at the same time "charged up" mentally due to the stimulant was taking it's toll... Vyvanse is supposed to last about 12 hrs. But in my case, it actually lasted about 18-24 hrs on the lowest dose. (#2) Stomach pain got so bad that I could no longer take any sort of vitamins or suppliments. The pain lasted 24 hrs a day toward the end. I didn't correlate the stomach pain to the Vyvanse until several months into it. Before I realized what was going on I even went for a colonoscopy/EDG because it felt like there was a knot at the top of my stomach the size of my fist. I couldnt actually feel it with my hand but that's what it felt like on the inside. All tests came back fine fine. Then I realized the pain started gradually after I started Vyvanse so the doc finally stopped it. A few weeks ago he started me on 10mg Daytrana Patch along with Emsam patch. There is ZERO feeling of the stimulant "kicking in" which may be a good thing in the long run. I didnt feel anything on Daytrana for many days and actually thought I was going backwards, but I kept on with it just for the heck of it. I even doubled the dose for a few days and didnt feel anything so I went back to 10mg per day. I didnt have any of the intense focus or the energy on Daytrana 10 mg that I had experieced with Vyvanse. The good news is that after several weeks of Daytrana 10mg and Emsam 6mg, I am noticing a gentle (seemingly natural) improvement. There don't seem to be any side effects (stomach pain) or the feeling of a stimulant "kicking in" with super intense focus (which I DO miss) or anything noticable at all. I just find that I am functioning more like a "normal person" every day without a lot of up's and downs. As long as I take the Daytrana patch off early enough in the evening, I'm not really having any trouble sleeping.... and if I do have trouble, I take a couple of Benedryl. Its all very gentle and natural feeling. It occured to me last night that I could live like this. There is no dramatic improvement but there is real improvement. I'm still generally tired but functional, and I dont have the intense focus of a faster acting stimulant, but I do have better focus overall during the day. I'm not crying everyday, but I still cry at times. Having some wt gain though, (never feel satiated on EMSAM). Daytrana has no appetite supressant effect for me whatsoever on this low dose. But I hope to start exercising this year. I never felt like I had the energy or motivation to do that before, but I actually do now. I never feel like I can set the world on fire, but I feel like I can do a few more things now. I hope to get a handle on the wt gain over time. We'll see. I wish you all the best in your journey toward feeling better. On a final note, maybe I have settled for feeling less than 100% perfectly well every moment of every day. I know I have lowered my expectations for how I would like to feel , but I have to say things are going much much better.... even if its not perfect. Like I said before, I can actually live like this.! There is a lot to be said for that. What I can't live with is awful painful side effects, no sleep, sleep meds that make you groggy all the next day. I'm happier overall now..... A progam called Recovery encourages folks to strive to be "average" and stay away from extreme highs and extreme lows of life if at all possible. I feel very normal and very average now thanks to medicine that I decided to give a chance when I didnt even think it was working. I know its different for everyone which makes finding the answer even more difficult and even when you find the answer... it can change over time, but I want to encourage you to keep on looking and don't give up. I'd love to hear from you... I'm wondering if adding a low dose of a short acting stimulant like Adderall to the Daytrana and Emsam might put things over for me. Has anyone every heard of that?
