The AGI Dermatics lead compound is T4N5 Liposome Lotion, known as Dimericine, which encapsulates the DNA repair enzyme T4 endonuclease V in a liposome engineered to deliver the enzyme into cells of the skin. Studies in cell cultures and animals specify T4N5 liposomes increased repair of DNA damage caused by UV. In clinical testing in xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a genetic disease predisposing to skin cancer, Dimericine reduced the incidence of pre-malignant actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma.

Dimericine is a lotion created to be used the day after sunburn to protect against some forms of skin cancer, might win FDA approval in the next two years.  In tests on humans who were tremendously sensitive to sunlight, Dimericine reduced the incidence of skin cancer by a third and the number of precancers by two-thirds. If used daily, this lotion will reduce the occurrence of basal and squamous cell skin cancer and possibly malignant melanoma.

Earlier research showed that the cream helped to prevent skin cancer in people with a rare disorder called XP. People with XP are so susceptible to sunlight that they have to spend their lives indoors with the shades drawn. Their skin can burn after only a few minutes of sun exposure, and they get skin cancer at 1,000 times the average rate.

Skin cancer is caused by mutations to DNA from frequent exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays. When rubbed on the skin, the enzyme in the cream penetrates the skin's cells and acts to work. The enzyme speeds up the rate of repair to the damage in the skin, and in that way it can reduce the incidence of skin cancer.
