EXUBERA   EXUBERA

Pfizer Incorporation in conditional association with Nektar Therapeutics have initiated manufacturing of Exubera – the brand name of the first ever inhaleable insulin formulation which is licensed to be used by both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic patients. Exubera is considered as the short or quick acting insulin, it reached the peak concentration levels even faster than some other insulin that were administered through injection process, according to certain clinical studies. Thus Exubera is said to act faster in the body than the injected type of insulin. However, the patients of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes would yet need to take the injections of extended acting insulin for maintaining the basic level for the 24 hours periods.

The working of Exubera is reported to be by using the policy of diminishing the element size of insulin and transforming it into the dry powder enabling it to get absorbed in the lungs faster. It is usually available in two different strengths such 1 mg and 3 mg blisters that are inserted into the inhaler for use which is in turn delivered to the lungs through the mouth. As recommended by the formulators, Exubera is only designated for use by the patients over 18 years of age, although formal studies on the children are in the pipeline. The drug is also not suggested for those who smoke or have stopped smoking very recently i.e. less than 6 months back. Moreover, people having or suffering from particular types of ailments or disorders such as lungs disease, already pregnant women or planning to conceive pregnancy within very near future, should not take Exubera.

Like any other medications, Exubera may too exhibit some side effects such as: cough, dry mouth and chest discomfort. Since Exubera is inhaled, it may cause negligible declines in the quantum of air that lungs usually hold, that in turn lower the lungs functions. Such signs may cause risks on the longer run according to the scientists. The breathing test is necessary beside some additional tests before taking Exubera.
