These anaerobic bacteria usually thrive in low oxygen environments, causing diseases in the liver, abdomen and pelvis. Similarly parasites like ameba and Giardia lamblia cause chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain in infected individuals. Metronidazole works by blocking some of the cell functions of these diseases causing microorganisms, which results in their demise.
