MONTELUKAST   MONTELUKAST

Montelukast is also known as Singulair, and is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist for the treatment of asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever. Leukotrienes are a naturally occurring group of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation in asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis. Montelukast works by blocking the possible binding of some leukotrienes. Montelukast has been found to be safe and effective in children as young as 6 months of age.

Montelukast starts working shortly after three to fourteen days of therapy. It must never be used in the treatment of an acute asthmatic attack.

The recommended dose for montelukast, which is a prescription drug, is anywhere from 4, to 10 mg a day. The lower dosage tablets of 4 and 5 mg are normally prescribed to children under eleven years old. It is recommended the Montelukast be taken in the evening with or without food so it works while you are sleeping.

Tablets should be stored at room temperature.

If used with certain drugs like Phenobarbital and Rifampin, the blood concentration of montelukast will be increased by about 40% which is potential dangerous. Thus the dose of montelukast will have to be reduced when given along with these drugs.

The effects that are generally associated with montelukast are, but certainly not limited to, dizziness, headache, sore throat, abdominal pain, and rhinitis which is the inflammation of the inner lining of the nose. These side effects tend to occur in up to 14% of persons who take montelukast.
