ORLISTAT   ORLISTAT

Orlistat a.k.a. Xenical, promotes weight loss by preventing the fat in foods from being digested and absorbed. The fat in food is broken down in the intestine by an enzyme called lipase, so that it can be absorbed into the body. Orlistat blocks the effects of lipase, thus preventing the breakup and absorption of fat. Studies show that up to 25% of potential fat absorption is blocked by Orlistat. The unabsorbed fat will be excreted in the stool.

Most of the persons who use Orlistat are obese, and have a body mass index of over 30 kg/m2. Studies show that when the drug is taken for six months to a year average weight loss was approximately 12 to 13 pounds.

Orlistat is a prescription drug and the recommended dosage is one capsule of 20 mg three times daily. It is taken during or one hour after a meal that contains about 15 mg of fat.

Orlistat is not recommended for pregnant women and nursing mothers.
