Prochlorperazine is a generic drug that can be manufactured by any pharmaceutical company. Prochlorperazine is a highly effective neuroleptic, which is 10 to 20 times more potent than chlorpromazine. It is a very typical antipsychotic drug of the phenothiazine class sold under the names Compazine?, Buccastem? and Stemetil?. It is now more frequently used for the treatment of nausea and vertigo. It is used basically to alleviate the symptoms of vertigo as an antiemetic, particularly for nausea and vomiting caused by cancer treatment and in the pre- and postoperative setting quite recently.

Prochlorperazine maleate

This medicine does contain the active ingredient prochlorperazine maleate, which is a type of medicine called a phenothiazine. Prochlorperazine is used extensively in psychiatry in higher doses than are contained in this medicine. However, the lower dose contained in this medicine is used generally to treat nausea and vomiting associated with migraine. Prochlorperazine works in nausea and vomiting by blocking the dopamine receptors that are found in an area of the brain known as the chemoreceptor trigger zone.

Side effects
Dizziness, drowsiness, amenorrhea, blurred vision, skin reactions, and hypotension may occur. If fever with grippe-like symptoms occurs, then appropriate liver studies should be conducted. If tests indicate an abnormality then should stop treatment. There have been a very few observations of fatty changes in the livers of patients who have died while receiving the drug.
