RAMELTEON   RAMELTEON

Ramelteon is the first type of drugs that selectively binds to melatonin receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus to act as a sleep agent. It is marketed as Rozerem by Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America and is approved by FDA for long term usage.

Ramelteon is basically a sedative or hypnotic that is used for treating insomnia. It does not seem to have any appreciable binding to GABA-A receptors that are associated with amnesic, anxiolytic and myorelaxant effects. it is also a drug that does show any dependance and has no potential for abuse and rebound insomnia that prevails with other GABA modulators.

Currently, Ramelteon is available as a non-scheduled prescription drug for treating insomnia in the United States. However there are some recreational users who use this drug for its powerful hallucegonic effects. this is because being a hypnotic, Ramelteon affects the chemicals in the brain that become unbalanced and cause sleep problems.

As Ramelteon makes you fall asleep, it should be taken in normal waking hours, unless you have spent 7 to 8 hours sleeping. It is posible to take Ramelteon and engage in activity like driving and making phone calls, only to be unaware of one’s activities. if this happens to you, discontinue the drug and talk with the doctor on some other treatment for your sleep problem.

Do not take Ramelteon if you have lung disease, sleep apnea, a history of depression, suicide and mental illness or a history of drugs or alcohol addiction. It should not be taken by pregnant and breast feeding women. And take the medication as prescribed to you without any increase in the dosage or term of medication. Ramelteon may cause allergic reactions, hallucinations, changes in menstrual periods and aggression. In such cases, call the doctor at once and discontinue taking it.
