Sibutramine is a drug that alters neurotransmitters within the brain medication offering assistance in the weight-loss process. Neurotransmitters are chemicals produced and released by nerves, to communicate with other nerves. When some neurotransmitters are released, the nerves that released them, a process termed reuptake, may take them up again. Sibutramine works by blocking this reuptake of the neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. This will alter their balance within the nerve cells and affect nerve function and interaction.

When patients take Sibutramine the may see a 5-10 % decrease in their baseline weight. There is also in some cases, an improvement in blood lipids such as cholesterol.

Treatment using Sibutramine usually begins with one10mg tablet each day, which is taken in the morning. Dosage may be increased as determined by your doctor after several weeks has passed to achieve the desired effect. Sibutramine can be taken with or without food.

Using Sibutramine during pregnancy is not recommended. For any woman who could become pregnant, adequate contraception is necessary while taking sibutramine. It is also not recommended for nursing mothers.

The main side effects of Sibutramine are inability to sleep, drowsiness, acne, dizziness, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, rash, chest pain, anxiety, changes in taste joint pain, back pain, depression, and dry mouth. Other side effects include irregular or painful menstrual periods, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, neck pain, nervousness, and palpitations.
