The world famous wide spread pharmaceutical giant Abbott which is dedicated to discover, develop manufacture and market various renowned medical products such as nutritional, devices and diagnostics, has acquired Kos Pharmaceuticals, who have designed and developed the wonder formulation known as Simcor. Abbott has submitted its official New Drug Application – NDA to the Foods & Drugs Administration of the United States for their fixed-dose combination drug preparation called Simcor of Niaspan which is the extended release niacin and simvastatin based formulation. The product is intended for targeting manifold lipid factors through a singular pill dose.

Both of the constituents of Simcor, Niaspan and Simvastatin are the most commonly prescribed medicines used in the treatments of cholesterols of which Niaspan has been in use for increasing HDL – good cholesterol levels and Simvastatin quite effectively decreases LDL – bad cholesterol levels. Now this wonder combination has been submitted to the U.S. FDA for seeking its formal recognition for its use in the treatment of LDL, HDL and triglycerides through the singular pill dosage which would provide much convenience and remarkable results to the patients.

The new drug application also incorporates data from a couple of large clinical studies comprising of over 1150 randomized patients which assessed the safety and efficiency of the combination of Niaspan and simvastatin in patients having Dyslipidaemia. The further repercussions of combining Niaspan and simvastatin on vital lipid factors were also checked through these studies. As guided by the National Cholesterol Education Panel-NCEP, reduction of 1 percent LDL cholesterol correspondingly reduces 1 percent risk of coronary disorders whereas the improvement in HDL by just 1 point would minimize the risk of coronary disorders by 2 points.
