It is very important to understand that Singulair is used to prevent an asthma attack, not to treat it. It cannot stop an asthma attack midway. Regular usage of the drug will prevent or cut down the chances of an asthma attack. Consult your physician before taking the drug if you are pregnant or breastfeeding your baby.  You should always tell your doctor about any other medical condition that you may be having before taking singulair. It is also important to tell your doctor about any other medication that you may be already taking.

Mild side effects of using Singulair include sore throat, dizziness, tiredness, upset stomach, heartburn, and nasal irritation. These are very common and you can continue your medication after consulting your physician. Serious side effects that require your physician’s help include numbness, flu, inflammation, worsening respiratory problems, and open sores. Utmost care has to be taken in case of an allergic reaction which is characterized by hives, difficulty breathing, and swollen face or lips. In such cases, stop the medication at once and get medical attention immediately.
