TIBOLONE   TIBOLONE

Tibolone drug?s patent is held by Novartis and is licensed by them throughout the world. Tibolone is a synthetic steroid, which mimics the activity of oestrogen and progesterone in the body. Oestrogen is central sex hormone in the female body. Certain parts of the body such as the bones, vagina and breasts rely on oestrogen to function normally. When levels of the oestrogen are low, these tissues can slowly degenerate, as is experienced during menopause. Additionally low levels of oestrogen can cause distressing symptoms such as hot flushes, mood swings, reduced sex drive and vaginal dryness. Tibolone when taken by mouth is broken down into basically three compounds, which act in a similar way to the natural oestrogen and progesterone found in the body. The balance of hormones is in the body is therefore restored and the symptoms of menopause are reduced and thereby osteoporosis is prevented.

Tibolone is used for Hot flushes and sweating caused by the hormonal disturbances during the menopause. It is also used to help prevent the development of osteoporosis.
A woman is considered fertile for 2 years after her last menstrual period if she is under 50, or for 1 year if over the age of 50. HRT does not provide for contraception in women who fall within this group. If a potentially fertile woman takes the HRT and contraception is required, non-hormonal methods are necessary. In case you forget to take a pill, take it as soon as you remember, and the next one at your normal time. If you are 12 hours or more late, another contraceptive method should be used for the next seven days, whilst continuing with normal pill taking.
