Toprol XL is developed and launched in the United States by the forerunner pharmaceutical giants known as Novartis. The formulation is prepared by using the most powerful ingredient called metoprolol succinate which is the selective beta1 receptor blocker used for treating quite a few ailments of the cardiovascular system. The drug is marketed under the brand name of Toprol XL in the United States markets whereas with different brand names in the other countries.

Toprol XL is the sustained release formulation which has been typically indicated for the use in the treatments of various ailments such as: Essential hypertension; Coronary heart diseases including preventing the angina attacks; secondary prevention after the myocardial infarction; low dosage in treatments of several types of heart failure; migraine prophylaxis as well as used as the conjoiner in the treatments of hyperthyroidism.

The medication is made available in three different dose strengths like: 50mg, 100mg and 200mg. the medication is in the tablet form and recommended dose size is 1 tablet every day before meal or before going to bed or as directed by the physician. Toprol XL or metoprolol may develop the early warning symptoms of low blood sugar – hypoglycemia hence it should be used cautiously by the patients who are undergoing any diabetic treatments. The children should not be given this medication unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor as this is a habit forming drug.
