Zileuton is a drug that is used to prevent asthma symptoms by blocking formation of all substances that cause fluid retention, mucous secretion, inflammation and any constriction in the lungs. Zileuton is found in tablet form and is taken orally, four times a day.

It is important to follow the directions on the prescription label carefully and to clarify parts not understood with the doctor or pharmacy. Take Zileuton as directed and not more or less than prescribed by the doctor. Though Zileuton controls asthma symptoms, it is not effective in curing them. So you have to continue taking Zileuton even if you feel well and you should not take Zileuton without consulting the doctor.

Before starting to take Zileuton, you have to inform the doctor of any allergy to Zileuton or other drugs. Inform the doctor of any prescription or non prescription drugs you take, especially anticoagulants and vitamins. Tell the doctor if you have or have suffered from liver disease and if you consume alcohol regularly. Pregnant, planning to become pregnant and breastfeeding women should inform the doctor before taking Zileuton.

There are some side effects associated with Zileuton like headache, heartburn, vomiting, upset stomach, dizziness, constipation, insomnia, nervousness or gas. If there is fatigue, stomach pain, itching, flu like symptoms or yellowing of the eyes or skin, contact the doctor immediately. 

Zyflo is a drug containing Zileuton and is presently the only FDA approved asthma treatment that works in inhibiting the production of 5-lipoxygenase, the enzyme used for producing leukotrienes which triggers asthma symptoms in the body.
