ERAXIS   ERAXIS

Eraxis (Anidulafungin) is an antifungal drug developed by Pfizer Inc., which is administered intravenously, and is used to treat Candida infections in the esophagus (candidiasis), blood stream (candidemia), and other forms of Candida infections, including abdominal abscesses and peritonitis. The safety and effectiveness of Eraxis was evaluated in clinical studies and Eraxis was shown to be safe and effective in the treatment of esophageal candidiasis, candidemia, and other Candida infections including abdominal abscesses and peritonitis.  Eraxis was generally well tolerated in all clinical studies. The most commonly reported adverse events were mild diarrhea, mild elevations in laboratory tests of liver enzymes, and in some cases headache. Some patients experienced infusion-related reactions, most of which were relatively mild. In a few patients with major underlying medical conditions who were on multiple concomitant medications, there were reports of serious hepatic abnormalities.

Eraxis is active against most clinically applicable species of Candida. Eraxis also has activity against Aspergillus spp. In-vitro data show that Eraxis is active against fluconazole-resistant Candida.

Two trials evaluated Eraxis (anidulafungin) for treatment of candidemia and other candida infections. One was a dose-ranging study comparing anidulafungin 50mg, 75mg and 100mg once daily and the other compared anidulafungin 100mg once daily to fluconazole 400mg IV once per day. In the dose-ranging study, the primary outcome was global response in the evaluable patients, at the follow-up visit, which took place 2- weeks after the close of therapy. The global response rate at follow-up was similar for the 75 and 100mg doses (90% and 89%) in comparison with a lower response rate with seen with the 50mg dose (72%).
